What are the signs that my car needs suspension repairs?
If your vehicle feels bouncy, bottoms out over speed bumps, or leans to one side, it could be time for suspension repairs. Other common signs include uneven tyre wear, clunking noises when turning or going over bumps, or poor handling when cornering. These symptoms may be caused by worn shocks or struts, damaged bushings, or problems with your control arms or springs. Left untreated, suspension issues can lead to poor ride comfort, reduced safety and added wear on other parts of the vehicle.
How do steering and suspension systems work together?
Your vehicle’s steering and suspension systems are closely connected. The steering system allows you to control the direction of your car, while the suspension keeps the vehicle stable and absorbs bumps in the road. Components like tie rods, ball joints and control arms help link these systems and ensure smooth, predictable handling. If one system starts to wear out, it can affect the other – for example, worn suspension parts can lead to poor steering response or misalignment. Regular inspections help catch these issues early.
Can I drive with a worn suspension system?
While you might still be able to drive with worn suspension components, it’s not recommended. Damaged or sagging suspension can reduce braking effectiveness, make handling unpredictable and cause excessive tyre wear. It can also increase stress on other vehicle systems over time. If you notice any changes in how your car rides, especially roughness, pulling or noise, it’s best to have it checked as soon as possible. Prompt suspension repairs can restore comfort and safety and may prevent more costly repairs later.
